Palitana Temple

 

 
       The palitana temple of Jainism are located on Shatrunjaya hill by the city of palitana in Bhavnagar district, Gujrat, India. The palitana temple also know as  "city of temples"  . Shatrunjaya means a  "Place of victory against inner enemies " . This site on shatrunjaya hill is considered sacred by Svetambara  Jains. It is said that 23 of 24 Jain Tirthankaras, except Neminatha , scanctified the hill by the visits. The main temple is reached by stepping up 3500 steps.
 
 
 
        The palitana was an important  province of  the saurashtra kindom. There are approximately 863 marble-carved temples on the hills spread mostly in nine clusters. some being vast temple complexes, while most small in size. The main temple is dedicated to Rishabhanatha, the first Tirthankara, it is the holiest shrine for the svetambara Murtipujaka sect. Digambara Jains have only one temple here on the hills palitana has a pleasant climate round the year. Winter are cool and provide the best views of the nearby Gulf of cambay secoast owing to clean skils. All these places of worship are immaculate and very opulent no matter what the size and the top can be reached after walking up around 3500 steps from the foothills. The currently standing structures have been renovated several times but the authenticity and spirituality here remain untouched.
 
  
 
           The terichly mple of palitana display exquisite architecture and are heavily and very ornamented and adorned. The interior are very intricately and finely carved complete with geometric loce designs, elaborately carved ceilings and clustered froms of canopies. As one is climbing up the stairs people are expected maintain the sanctity of this place by keeping silent and praying. Mahavir Jayanti or the Birthday of Lord Mahavira is another prominent festival held in palitana.
